Course Overview

Duration: Typically run over 5 consecutive days or 3 weekends

Previous experience required: 5 days sea time, 100 nm, 4 night hours all on a sailing yacht and Day Skipper shorebased or equivalent knowledge

Content: to experience being in charge at the helm, making simple route plans and executing them, basic night sailing. This course is ideal for anyone wanting to further their sailing skills and wanting to sail their own boat in familiar waters.
Topics covered include:
  • Preparation - What you need to sort out before leaving to go out to sea
  • Deckwork - Dealing with the sails, ropes and anchors when leaving or arriving
  • Navigation - Putting the theory course into practice
  • Helming - More chance to practice berthing/sailing from the helm
  • Pilotage - Getting the yacht in and out of a harbour to the open sea
  • Engines - Doing the basic checks so you can rely on its assistance when there is no wind or when berthing/unberthing
  • Highway Code - Being able to work out who needs to get out of the way
  • The Weather - Where to obtain the weather and a little bit of understanding and a bit of interpretation.
  • Emergency Situation - What you as a skipper needs to do and how to do it
  • Fixing Stuff - Basic stuff although we won’t complain if you fancy doing a bit extra
  • Victualling - We would not want to go hungry
  • Passage Making - Getting from A to B via water and in one piece
  • Night time on the water - Assisting in getting in and out of harbour

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the RYA Day Skipper Course completion certificate.
